More information on Breast Biopsies...
Biopsies are performed at the Oklahoma Breast Care Center under local anesthesia.
There are no stitches, no scarring, and it’s relatively painless.
A doctor's order may be reuqired for a procedure, please inquire when scheduling your appointment. Following are descriptions of both stereotactic and ultrasound guided biopsy
procedures.
Minimally Invasive Stereotactic Biopsy
During the stereotactic biopsy, you will be lying on your stomach with your
breast through an opening in the table. Your breast will be compressed, as in
a mammogram, and you will be asked not to move during this time. X-rays will
be taken of your breast to locate the area to be biopsied. A small area of your
breast will be cleaned. Your doctor will then numb the biopsy area before inserting
the probe.
A small incision is then made in the breast, through which a biopsy probe is
placed to remove a tissue sample. After obtaining the sample, final x-rays may
be taken to ensure the lesion was sufficiently biopsied.
Minimally Invasive Ultrasound Guided Biopsy
During the ultrasound guided biopsy, you will be lying on your back with your
arm above your head. Your breast will be scanned via ultrasound to determine
the location and best approach to the lesion. Your skin is then marked
to indicate the entrance point for the biopsy probe. A small area of your
breast will be
cleaned. Your doctor will then numb the biopsy area before inserting
the probe.
A small incision is then made in the breast, through which a biopsy probe is placed to remove a tissue sample. A post-biopsy scan is taken to ensure that the lesion was sufficiently biopsied.
| Instructions Prior to your Breast Biopsy | |
| 1. | Please make sure you do not take any aspirin or ibuprofen products at least 7 days prior to your biopsy. Blood thinning (anti-coagulants) and herbal blood thinning medications need to be stopped 7 days prior to biopsy. If you have any questions about your medications containing aspirin products please call your pharmacy. |
| 2. | If you have had your mammogram and/or ultrasound done at another facility please contact them to request these records. It is important for us to have your records and films at the time of your procedure. If we do not have these it may be necessary to repeat these exams and/or cancel your biopsy. |
| 3. | If preparing for a Stereotactic Biopsy: Please wear a comfortable two-piece outfit and no body powder or lotion on the breast area. You will need to wear a supportive bra immediately after your biopsy (please bring or wear one) and for 3 days and 3 nights following the procedure. This will be discussed with you on an individual basis. For other biopsy procedures there are no specific special instructions. |
| 4. | A small breast biopsy marker will be placed into the breast by the doctor performing the biopsy. The clip will be made of titanium or ceramic composite material and is approximately 3 mm in size. The marker clip may be placed where the lesion was located to ensure that the site can be easily located for additional follow-up as needed. |
| 5. | Patients with implants: Every effort is made to avoid damage/rupture to the implant; however, there does remain a very slight risk of this unexpected complication. |
| 6. | We will need a list of any medications you are presently taking and any drug allergies. |
| 7. | The procedure takes approximately 1/2 hour. However, please plan to be at our center for approximately 1 1/2 hours to include paperwork and post care instructions. |
| 8. | You may return to work today, although strenuous activities and lifting greater than 20 lbs is prohibited for 24 hours. |
